Texas Panhandle Wildfires — 2024
Housing Support During Disaster Recovery
In early 2024, devastating wildfires swept across the Texas Panhandle, destroying homes, displacing families, and creating urgent housing needs for affected communities.
Although the fires occurred outside THF’s immediate service area, Texas Housing Foundation partnered with State Representative Ken King and local organizations to help connect displaced residents with temporary housing support during the disaster response and recovery process.
For many families affected by the fires, safe temporary housing became one of the most immediate and urgent needs following evacuation and property loss. The experience reinforced the critical role housing organizations and community partnerships play during disaster recovery efforts.
The Panhandle wildfire response also highlighted the growing importance of regional housing resilience across Texas communities. As disasters become more frequent and housing shortages continue affecting rural communities, access to safe temporary and transitional housing remains an essential part of community recovery and long-term resilience planning.
Texas Housing Foundation continues working with communities and partners across Texas to support practical housing strategies that help communities respond to emergencies while strengthening long-term housing opportunities for the future.
